CECC confirms 167 indigenous COVID-19 cases and 3 imported cases


On June 16, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced 170 new confirmed cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Taiwan. Of the 170 cases, 167 are indigenous and the other three are imported. The CECC also announced 18 deaths today.

The CECC pointed out that of the 167 indigenous cases, 85 are men and the other 82 are women, aged between under 5 to 99 years old. They began to suffer the onset of symptoms between June 1 and June 15, 2021. Regarding those indigenous cases, New Taipei City reported most cases, at 65, and Taipei City had the second highest number, at 50. Miaoli County reported 21 cases; Taoyuan City reported 14; Hualien reported 8; Hsinchu County reported 5; Keelung City reported 2; Taichung City and Kaohsiung City reported 1 each.

Regarding the 18 deaths announced today, they were nine men and nine women between 30 and 99 years old.

Regarding the three new imported cases, Case #13371 and Case #13372 are two male Filipino sailors in their 20s. They traveled to Taiwan from the Philippines on May 13 and May 5, respectively. After completing their quarantine period, they tested negative. They took a self-paid test on June 14 as they planned to leave Taiwan. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the cases on June 16.

Case #13501 is a Taiwanese man in his 20s. He returned to Taiwan from the Philippines on May 24. He experienced a fever and cough on June 9, after completing the quarantine period. He returned home to practice self-health management after seeking medical attention. He sought medical attention on June 15 because his symptoms persisted. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on June 16.

The CECC reported that a total of 937,150 cases related to COVID-19 have been reported in Taiwan among which COVID-19 has been ruled out in 914,861. Of these reported cases, infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in 13,409 cases. Of the 13,409 confirmed cases, 1,161 are imported; 12,195 are indigenous; 36 are naval crew members aboard the Panshi fast combat support ship; 2 are infections on an aircraft; 1 case has unknown sources of infection; 14 cases' sources of infection are being investigated; and a cumulative total of 94 cases (including 2 newly added) have been removed from the list of confirmed cases. Of the confirmed cases, there have been 478 deaths
