Abstract:

On August 18, 2022, one hospital in central Taiwan reported a dengue fever case of a 55-year-old man residing in Tanzi District, Taichung City. After an expanded epidemiologic investigation conducted by the local health unit, three additional cases, including one domestic case and two imported cases, were discovered.
The two imported cases showed typical dengue symptoms during their international trip before returning to Taiwan. Multiple positive mosquito breeding site and adult Aedes albopictus mosquitoes were found in the neighborhood.
We speculated that two domestic cases might have contracted dengue fever related to imported cases, causing this outbreak.
This is the first locally-acquired dengue fever cluster in Taichung City in three years. The local health units implemented various prevention approaches and control measures, including epidemiologic investigation, collaborations among agencies, medical institution visits, health education propaganda. With all the efforts from the central and local governments, the epidemic was swiftly controlled.
