Abstract:
During the period 1975-1984, more than 18,000 persons in Taiwan took their own lives. In 1984, suicide was the ninth leading cause of mortality in the Taiwan Area, and the second leading cause of mortality among adolescents and young adults age 15-24 years. At present, few health resources are a1ocated to examining the causes of suicides in Taiwan and identifying potential intervention measures. In this brief report, we present an overview of the problem of suicide in Taiwan, and offer some suggestions for areas of further study. Data for this report were obtained from death certificate information compi1ed in the Department of Health’s Vital Statistics Abstracts, the Ministry of the Interior’s Demographic Fact Book, and the Yearbook of Labor Statistics.
