Abstract:

Entamoeba histolytica is generally more prevalent in orphanages, prisons and asylums, all places where crowded conditions exist. Between 1987 and 1990, the National Institute of Preventive Medicine of the Department of Health had conducted serological examinations of 4,803 persons in 12 psychiatric care institutions in Taiwan by using the indirect hemoagglutinin (IHA) method. The average positive rate obtained was 30.00%; the highest rate, or 45.39%, came from an East Coast institution (unpublished data).
