Abstract:

During the period January 19-20, 1986, an outbreak of gastroenteritis occurred among athletes training in the National Athletic Camp near Kaohsiung City. Approximately 230 athletes and 40 coaches attend the camp where they live in a dormitory and take most of their meals in one of two campus cafeterias. On the evening of January 18, several athletes developed symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. New cases of illness continued to occur through January 20. A total of 70 (33%) of 214 athletes and coaches on campus at the time of the outbreak became ill (Figure 3). Symptoms and signs included diarrhea (89%), nausea (39%), vomiting (27%), and fever (20%). Thirty (43%) of those ill were treated at the campus health station; nine (13%) required hospitalization. Illness lasted from 1 hour to 5 days with median of 72 hours.
