CECC confirms 3 more imported COVID-19 cases; cases arrive in Taiwan from Indonesia and the Philippines

On January 9, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced three new confirmed imported cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Taiwan. Among the three new cases, one arrived in Taiwan from Indonesia (Case #827) and the other two (Case #828 and Case #829) traveled from the Philippines.

Case #827 is an over 30-year-old fisherman from the Indonesia. The Indonesian fisherman arrived in Taiwan on December 23, 2020. After arrival, he underwent quarantine at a quarantine hotel. He hasn’t experienced any symptoms since arrival. After completing the quarantine period, the fisherman took a self-paid COVID-19 test on January 7, 2021. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on January 9.

Case #828 and Case #829 are an over 20-year-old woman and an over 30-year-old male migrant worker, respectively, from the Philippines. The two Philippine nationals traveled to Taiwan on December 13 and December 18, 2020, respectively. They stayed at group quarantine facilities to undergo quarantine after arrival. They have not developed any symptoms since arrival. The two Philippine nationals were given COVID-19 tests on December 27 and December 31, 2020, and they both tested negative. After completing the self-health management period, they took self-paid COVID-19 tests on January 7 and January 8, 2021, respectively. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the cases on January 9.

The CECC reported that a cumulative total of 131,483 cases related to COVID-19 have been reported in Taiwan among which COVID-19 has been ruled out in 129,212. Of these reported cases, infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in 828 cases. Of the 828 confirmed cases, 733 are imported; 56 are indigenous; 36 are naval crew members aboard the Panshi fast combat support ship; 2 are infections on an aircraft; 1 case has unknown sources of infection; and 1 case (Case #530) has been removed (Case #530 is not assigned to any patients). Of the confirmed cases, there have been 7 deaths, and 720 patients have been released from isolation, with the other 101 patients remaining hospitalized in isolation.
