On October 2, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced two new confirmed imported cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Taiwan. The two new cases are a Taiwanese man in his 30s (Case # 516) and a Taiwanese man in his 40s (Case # 517). They entered Taiwan from the United States and Japan.

Case #516 worked in the United States for an extended period of time. The case returned to Taiwan to visit his relatives on September 20. The case showed no symptoms upon arrival. He voluntarily notified airport quarantine officers that he had come into contact with a confirmed case in the United States and had developed a fever, loss of sense of smell, and dry cough on August 28. After he underwent COVID-19 testing arranged by quarantine officers, he tested negative. Thus, he continued to undergo quarantine at home. The case developed a dry cough between September 24 to September 30. Health authorities then arranged his medical care and COVID-19 testing. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on October 2. The case is currently hospitalized in isolation for treatment.

Case #517 visited Japan for work in January. The case developed a mild diarrhea, stuffy nose, fever, cough, muscle pain, and an abnormal sense of smell between September 15 and September 22. He sought medical attention twice in Japan and was diagnosed with a cold and viral infection. He was given prescriptions and then went home to rest. When he returned to Taiwan on September 30, the case voluntarily notified airport quarantine officers of his symptoms. After quarantine officers arranged his COVID-19 testing, he was taken to a group quarantine facility. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on October 2. The case is currently hospitalized in isolation for treatment.

The CECC reported that a cumulative total of 94,067 cases related to COVID-19 have been reported in Taiwan among which COVID-19 has been ruled out in 92,865. Of these reported cases, infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in 517 cases. Of the 517 confirmed cases, 425 are imported; 55 are indigenous; 36 are naval crew members aboard the Panshi fast combat support ship; and 1 case has unknown sources of infection. Of the confirmed cases, there have been 7 deaths, and 484 patients have been released from isolation, with the other 26 patients remaining hospitalized in isolation.
