CECC confirms 84,639 more COVID-19 cases, including 84,587 domestic cases and 52 imported cases


On May 21, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced 84,639 new confirmed cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Taiwan. Of the 84,639 new cases, 84,587 are domestic and 52 are imported (34 of them tested positive upon landing). The CECC announced 59 deaths today.

Regarding the 84,587 new domestic cases, 40,348 are male and 44,215 are female, while the gender of the other 24 cases is under investigation. They range in age from under five to above 90 years. Of those domestic cases, 23,346 were reported in New Taipei City, 10,590 in Taipei City, 10,453 in Taoyuan City, 7,989 in Taichung City, 7,646 in Kaohsiung City, 4,609 in Tainan City, 2,808 in Changhua County, 2,472 in Hsinchu County, 2,265 in Pingtung County, 2,019 in Yilan County, 1,757 in Keelung City, 1,601 in Miaoli County, 1,575 in Hsinchu City, 1,219 in Hualien County, 1,128 in Yunlin County, 924 in Nantou County, 780 in Chiayi County, 576 in Taitung County, 505 in Chiayi City, 184 in Penghu County, 135 in Kinmen County, and 6 in Lienchiang County.

Regarding the 59 deaths from domestic cases announced today, they were 32 men and 27 women ranging in age from 30 to above 90 years. They were severe cases.

Regarding the 52 new imported cases, they were 31 men and 21 women ranging in age from under five to 79 years. The areas these cases arrived from are being investigated. They all arrived between May 19 and 20, 2022.

The CECC reported that a total of 10,171,178 cases related to COVID-19 have been reported in Taiwan among which COVID-19 has been ruled out in 8,926,804. Of these reported cases, infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in 1,240,897 cases. Of the 1,240,897 confirmed cases, 12,484 are imported; 1,228,359 are domestic; 36 are naval crew members aboard the Panshi fast combat support ship; 3 are infections on an aircraft; 1 case has an unknown source of infection; 14 cases' sources of infection are being investigated. There have been a cumulative total of 1,343 COVID-19 deaths since 2020; of the 1,343 deaths, 1,328 are from domestic cases and the other 15 are from imported cases.
