Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Update 41


October 23, 2012--As of October 23, 2012, 149 cases (including 2 deaths) of enterovirus infection with severe complications have been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2012; two were caused by CA 2, one was caused by Echo 6, one was caused by EV71 and CA2 co-infection, one was caused by EV71 and CB4 co-infection, one was caused by EV71 and CB3 co-infection and the others were caused by EV71. In 2011, there were 59 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications; one case was caused by CA10 and the others were caused by EV71. 10 cases confirmed in 2012 aged 10-17 years old. The other 139 cases are aged below 10 years. (See Table 1(pdf file)) Fig.1(pdf file) displays the geographical distribution of the cases according to their residence.

Two cases were confirmed in Week 42 (October 17 to October 23). They are a 6-month-old girl in Tainan City, a 3-year-old girl in Taoyuan County. Their infections were all caused by EV71 and they had been discharged. (See Fig. 2(pdf file))
