Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Update 46


November 27, 2012--As of November 27, 2012, 153 cases (including 2 deaths) of enterovirus infection with severe complications have been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2012; two were caused by CA2, one was caused by CB3, one was caused by Echo6, three were caused by EV71 and CA2 co-infection, EV71 and CB4 co-infection and EV71 and CB3 co-infection respectively, and the others were caused by EV71. In 2011, there were 59 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications; one case was caused by CA10 and the others were caused by EV71. 10 cases confirmed in 2012 aged 10-17 years old. The other 143 cases are aged below 10 years. (See Table 1(pdf file)) Fig.1(pdf file) displays the geographical distribution of the cases according to their residence.

One case was confirmed in Week 47 (November 21 to November 27). This case is a 5 days old newborn boy in Pingtung County. His infection was caused by Coxsackie B3 and he was still in intensive care unit. (See Fig. 2(pdf file))
