Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Update 36


September 18, 2012--As of September 18, 2012, 145 cases (including 2 deaths) of enterovirus infection with severe complications have been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2012; two were caused by CA 2, one was caused by Echo 6, one was caused by EV71 and CA2 co-infection, one was caused by EV71 and CB4 co-infection, one was caused by EV71 and CB3 co-infection and the others were caused by EV71. In 2011, there were 59 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications; one case was caused by CA10 and the others were caused by EV71. 10 cases confirmed in 2012 aged 10-17 years old. The other 135 cases are aged below 10 years. (See Table 1(pdf file)) Fig.1(pdf file) displays the geographical distribution of the cases according to their residence.

One case was confirmed in Week 37 (September 12 to September 18). This case is a 10-month-old boy in Taipei City. His infection was caused by EV71 and he was still in intensive care unit. (See Fig. 2(pdf file))
