Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Update 30


August 7, 2012--As of August 7, 2012, 124 cases (including 2 deaths) of enterovirus infection with severe complications have been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2012; two were caused by CA 2, one was caused by Echo 6, one was caused by EV71 and CA2 co-infection, one was caused by EV71 and CB4 co-infection, one was caused by EV71 and CB3 co-infection and the others were caused by EV71. In 2011, there were 59 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications; one case was caused by CA10 and the others were caused by EV71. Seven cases confirmed in 2012 aged 10-14 years old. The other 117 cases are aged below 10 years. (See Table 1(pdf file)) Fig.1(pdf file) displays the geographical distribution of the cases according to their residence.

Seven cases were confirmed in Week 31 (August 1 to August 7). They are a 3-year-old boy in Taoyuan County, a 4-year-old boy in Tainan City, a 2-year-old boy and a 8-year-old boy in Miaoli County, a 16-month-old girl, a 2-year-old girl and a 3-year-old boy in New Taipei City. Their infections were all caused by EV71. The 3-year-old boy in Taoyuan County died on August 5, 4 days after the onset. The 16-month-old girl in New Taipei City and the 2-year-old boy in Miaoli County were still in general hospital ward and intensive care unit respectively, and the rest of them had been discharged.
