Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Update 1


January 10, 2012--As of January 10, 2012, no case of enterovirus infection with severe complications had been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2012. In 2011, 57 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications had been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC. These cases are aged below 10 years (See Table 1(pdf file)) and reside in the northern, central, eastern and southern areas of Taiwan. (See Fig. 1(pdf file))

In the first week of 2012, two cases that developed symptoms in week 52 of 2011 were newly confirmed. They are 5-year-old girl from Chiayi County and 15-month-old boy from Changhua County. Their infections were all caused by EV71, and they had been discharged. (See Fig. 2(pdf file))
