Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Update 19


May 22, 2012--As of May 22, 2012, 45 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications have been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2012; one case was caused by Echo 6 and the others were caused by EV71. In 2011, there were 59 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications; one case was caused by CA10 and the others were caused by EV71. Two cases confirmed in 2012 are 11 and 12 years old. The other 43 cases are aged below 10 years. (See Table 1(pdf file)) Fig.1(pdf file) displays the geographical distribution of the cases according to their residence.

Seven cases were confirmed in Week 20 (May 16 to May 22). They are 4-month-old boy, 11-month-old boy and 3-year-old girl from Taipei City, 7-month-old boy from New Taipei City, 15-month-old girl from Taichung City, 2-year-old girl from Miaoli County and 9-year-old girl from Hsinchu City. Their infections were all caused by EV71 and they had been discharged. (See Fig. 2(pdf file))
