Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Update 18


May 15, 2012--As of May 15, 2012, 38 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications had been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2012. In 2011, 59 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications had been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC. Two cases confirmed in 2012 are 11 and 12 years old. The other 36 cases are aged below 10 years. (See Table 1(pdf file)) They reside in the northern, central, eastern and southern areas of Taiwan. (See Fig. 1(pdf file))

Four cases were confirmed in Week 19 (May 9 to May 15). They are 3-year-old girl from Taipei City, 20-month-old boy from Kaohsiung City, 9-month-old girl and 15-month-old boy from Tainan City. The infection of a 3-year-old girl from Taipei City was caused by Echo 6 and the infections of the other 3 cases were caused by EV71. They had all been discharged. (See Fig. 2(pdf file))
