July 3, 2012--As of July 3, 2012, 89 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications have been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2012; two were caused by CA 2, one was caused by Echo 6, one was caused by EV71 and CA2 co-infection, one was caused by EV71 and CB4 co-infection and the others were caused by EV71. In 2011, there were 59 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications; one case was caused by CA10 and the others were caused by EV71. Four cases confirmed in 2012 aged 10-12 years old. The other 85 cases are aged below 10 years. (See Table 1(pdf file)) Fig.1(pdf file) displays the geographical distribution of the cases according to their residence.
Seven cases were confirmed in Week 26 (June 27 to July 3). They are a 21-month-old girl in New Taipei City, a 4-year-old boy in Taoyuan County, a 6-month-old boy in Pingtung County, a 13-month-old girl and a 3-year-old girl in Taichung City, a 6-month-old boy and a 5-year-old boy in Tainan City. The 13-months-old girl in Taichung City was caused by CA 2 and the others were caused by EV71. The seven cases had all been discharged. (See Fig. 2(pdf file))
