Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Update 20


May 29, 2012--As of May 29, 2012, 53 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications have been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2012; one case was caused by Echo 6 and the others were caused by EV71. In 2011, there were 59 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications; one case was caused by CA10 and the others were caused by EV71. Four cases confirmed in 2012 aged 10-12 years old. The other 49 cases are aged below 10 years. (See Table 1(pdf file)) Fig.1(pdf file) displays the geographical distribution of the cases according to their residence.

Eight cases were confirmed in Week 21 (May 23 to May 29). They are 5-month-old boy and 5-year-old boy from Taipei City, 10-month-old boy and 10-year-old girl from Pingtung County, 4-year-old boy from New Taipei City, 2-year-old boy from Tainan City, 11-year-old girl from Taichung City and 20-month-old girl from Miaoli County. Their infections were all caused by EV71. The 10-month-old boy from Pingtung County and the 20-month-old girl from Miaoli County were still in intensive care unit; the rest of them had been discharged. (See Fig. 2(pdf file))
