April 24, 2012--As of April 24, 2012, 27 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications had been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2012. In 2011, 59 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications had been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC. One case confirmed in 2012 is 12 years old and the other 26 cases are aged below 10 years. (See Table 1(pdf file)) They reside in the northern, central, eastern and southern areas of Taiwan. Three cases were confirmed in Week 16 (April 18 to April 24). They are 2-year-old boy from Pingtung County, 17-month-old boy and 12-year-old girl from Tainan City. Their infections were all caused by EV71. The 17-month-old boy from Tainan City was still in intensive care unit and the rest of them had been discharged. (See Fig. 2(pdf file))
