February 28, 2012--As of February 28, 2012, 12 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications had been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2012. In 2011, 58 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications had been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC. The 12 cases confirmed in 2012 are aged below 10 years (See Table 1(pdf file)) and reside in the northern, central, eastern and southern areas of Taiwan. (See Fig. 1(pdf file))

One case was confirmed in Week 8 (February 22 to February 28). The case is a 22-month-old boy from Hsinchu County. His infection was caused by EV71, and he had been discharged. (See Fig. 2(pdf file))
