Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Update 28


July 24, 2012--As of July 24, 2012, 109 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications have been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2012; two were caused by CA 2, one was caused by Echo 6, one was caused by EV71 and CA2 co-infection, one was caused by EV71 and CB4 co-infection, one was caused by EV71 and CB3 co-infection and the others were caused by EV71. In 2011, there were 59 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications; one case was caused by CA10 and the others were caused by EV71. Six cases confirmed in 2012 aged 10-14 years old. The other 103 cases are aged below 10 years. (See Table 1(pdf file)) Fig.1(pdf file) displays the geographical distribution of the cases according to their residence.

Seven cases were confirmed in Week 29 (July 18 to July 24). They are a 14-month-old boy in Taipei City, a 3-year-old boy in New Taipei City, a 17-month-old boy in Taichung City, a 3-year-old boy in Pingtung County, a 4-year-old boy, a 7-month-old girl and a 14-year-old girl in Taoyuan County. The 17-month-old boy in Taichung City was caused by EV71 and CB3 co-infection and the others were caused by EV71. The seven cases had all been discharged. (See Fig. 2(pdf file))
