March 27, 2012--As of March 27, 2012, 20 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications had been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2012. In 2011, 58 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications had been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC. The 20 cases confirmed in 2012 are aged below 10 years (See Table 1(pdf file)) and reside in the northern, central, eastern and southern areas of Taiwan. (See Fig. 1(pdf file))

Three cases were confirmed in Week 12 (March 21 to March 27). They are 17-month-old boy and 4-year-old girl from Taichung City, 2-year-old boy from Tainan City. Their infections were all caused by EV71, and they had been discharged. (See Fig. 2(pdf file))
