Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Update 31


August 14, 2012--As of August 14, 2012, 130 cases (including 2 deaths) of enterovirus infection with severe complications have been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2012; two were caused by CA 2, one was caused by Echo 6, one was caused by EV71 and CA2 co-infection, one was caused by EV71 and CB4 co-infection, one was caused by EV71 and CB3 co-infection and the others were caused by EV71. In 2011, there were 59 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications; one case was caused by CA10 and the others were caused by EV71. Eight cases confirmed in 2012 aged 10-14 years old. The other 122 cases are aged below 10 years. (See Table 1(pdf file)) Fig.1(pdf file) displays the geographical distribution of the cases according to their residence.

Six cases were confirmed in Week 32 (August 8 to August 14). They are a 1-month-old boy in New Taipei City, a 8-month-old girl in Kinmen County, a 10-year-old girl in Hsinchu City, a 5-year-old girl, a 2-year-old boy and a 3-year-old boy in Taoyuan County. Their infections were all caused by EV71 and they had been discharged. (See Fig. 2(pdf file))
