Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Update 24


June 26, 2012--As of June 26, 2012, 82 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications have been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2012; one was caused by CA 2, one was caused by Echo 6, one was caused by EV71 and CA2 co-infection, one was caused by EV71 and CB4 co-infection and the others were caused by EV71. In 2011, there were 59 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications; one case was caused by CA10 and the others were caused by EV71. Four cases confirmed in 2012 aged 10-12 years old. The other 78 cases are aged below 10 years. (See Table 1(pdf file)) Fig.1(pdf file) displays the geographical distribution of the cases according to their residence.

Twelve cases were confirmed in Week 25 (June 20 to June 26). They are 1 girl and 4 boys aged from 9 months to 2 years old in Taichung City, 3 boys aged from 5 months to 2 years old in Tainan City, a 4-year-old boy in Taoyuan County, a 12-month-old boy in Kaohsiung City, a 3-year-old boy in Chiayi County and a 8-year-old boy in New Taipei City. The 16-months-old boy in Taichung City was caused by CA 2; the 2-years-old boy in Taichung City was caused by EV71 and CB4 co-infection and the others were caused by EV71. The 5-month-old boy in Tainan City died on June 21, 10 days after the onset and the others had been discharged. (See Fig. 2(pdf file))
