Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Update 33


August 28, 2012--As of August 28, 2012, 139 cases (including 2 deaths) of enterovirus infection with severe complications have been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2012; two were caused by CA 2, one was caused by Echo 6, one was caused by EV71 and CA2 co-infection, one was caused by EV71 and CB4 co-infection, one was caused by EV71 and CB3 co-infection and the others were caused by EV71. In 2011, there were 59 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications; one case was caused by CA10 and the others were caused by EV71. 10 cases confirmed in 2012 aged 10-17 years old. The other 129 cases are aged below 10 years. (See Table 1(pdf file)) Fig.1(pdf file) displays the geographical distribution of the cases according to their residence.

Four cases were confirmed in Week 34 (August 22 to August 28). They are a 11-month-old girl in Kaohsiung City, a 3-year-old boy in Taoyuan County, a 1-month-old girl and a 6-year-old girl in Taipei City. Their infections were all caused by EV71 and they had been discharged. (See Fig. 2(pdf file))
