March 20, 2012--As of March 20, 2012, 17 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications had been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2012. In 2011, 58 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications had been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC. The 17 cases confirmed in 2012 are aged below 10 years (See Table 1(pdf file)) and reside in the northern, central, eastern and southern areas of Taiwan. (See Fig. 1(pdf file))

Three cases were confirmed in Week 11 (March 14 to March 20). They are 6-month-old boy and 2-year-old boy from Tainan City, 2-year-old girl from Taipei City. Their infections were all caused by EV71, and they had been discharged. (See Fig. 2(pdf file))
