Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Update 19


May 21, 2013--As of May 21, 2013, 4 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications have been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2013; three cases were caused by Coxsackie A6 (CA6) and one case was caused by Enterovirus 71 (EV71). They all aged below 2 years. (See Table 1) Fig.1 displays the geographical distribution of these cases according to their residence. In 2012, there were 153 cases (including 2 deaths) of enterovirus infection with severe complications; among 153 confirmed cases there were 149 cases caused by EV71.

One case was confirmed in Week 20 (May 15 to May 21). This case is a 19-month-old boy in Taichung City imported from China. His infection was caused by EV71 and he had been discharged. (See Fig. 2
