3 June 2008--As of June 3, 2008, 136 cases have been confirmed (with 4 deaths), while 1 confirmed fatal case was reported, during the same period in 2007. Among 136 confirmed cases, 16 cases were still hospitalized (11 were in ICU and 5 were in general hospital wards), 116 cases were discharged, and 4 cases had died. The majority of the confirmed cases are aged between 1 and 2 years (See Table 1(pdf file)),and most are located in the southern areas of Taiwan, with the highest case number reported from Kaohsiung County. (See Fig. 1(pdf file)) The outbreak is still growing and is estimated to peak in June.
Between May 28 and June 3, 2008, 23 cases were newly confirmed. The 23 newly confirmed cases are all caused by EV71, and as of June 3, 6 cases were hospitalized (4 were in ICU and 2 were in general hospital wards), 17 cases were discharged. The majority of the cases are male (14 cases), and the rest are female (9 cases). The cases are all aged below 10, and 15 cases are aged around or below 2. 6 cases were reported from Tainan County, 3 cases were reported from Changhwa County, each 2 cases were reported from Taichung City, Taichung County, Kaohsiung County and Pingtung County, each 1 case was from Taoyuan County, Ilan County, Nantou County, Yunlin County, Tainan City and Kaohsiung City.(See Fig. 2(pdf file))
