7 October 2014 update- Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Week 40


October 7, 2014--As of October 7, 2014, 5 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications (including 1 death) have been confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2014; these cases were caused by Coxsackie A2, Coxsackie A5, Coxsackie A16, Echo 11 and Enterovirus 71 (EV71), respectively. They were all below 3 years old (Table 1). Figure 1 displays the geographical distribution of these cases according to their residence. In 2013, there were 12 cases (including 1 death) of enterovirus infection with severe complications; among them there were 7 cases caused by EV71.

No severe case was newly confirmed in Week 40 (October 1 to October 7, Fig. 2).
