17 June 2014 update- Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Week 24


June 17, 2014--As of June 17, 2014, 4 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications have been confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2014; these cases were caused by Coxsackie A2, Coxsackie A5 (CA5), Coxsackie A16 and Enterovirus 71 (EV71), respectively. They were all below 3 years old (Table 1). Figure 1 displays the geographical distribution of these cases according to their residence. In 2013, there were 12 cases (including 1 death) of enterovirus infection with severe complications; among 12 confirmed cases there were 7 cases caused by EV71.

One severe case was confirmed in Week 24 (June 11 to June 17, Fig. 2). The case was a 18-month-old boy; he was infected by CA5 and had been discharged.
